Japanese gardens tend to block views of the world outside. A key element in Japanese garden style is are vignettes that can't be viewed all at once. Winding paths are used for this reason, leading you towards exploration. Most Japanese gardens rely on subtle differences in color and texture, combining both nature and modernity. |

Reflecting
The process was long, but I really enjoyed taking the time in creating it. I had for the first time tried architectural design, and I found it to be much more complicated than I thought it would be. There were many things I needed to consider, from access to areas, as well as view, safety, and sound. I feel that I had successfully created an interesting home space that displayed rustic and Japanese theme. I feel that I was successful in creating an enjoyable and tranquil atmosphere. My intentions were to have the waterfall and fountain are be the focal point. This would be what would most stand out and would be the first thing people would look at when going into the backyard. People can jump into the pool and rest by the waterfall or swim into the fountain. Bushes were an added element that were not only for aesthetics, but also for home use. Berries and other plants would grow in theses areas. The area is also meant to be kid friendly, which can be seen in the sand pit and the different swings. There is empty space in order for additives to be more flexible, such as for a grill out, or a trampoline. The form of the house is an organic shape making it more interesting to look at. The layout is a little more complex than I had intended, and I am not sure if it would be something functional in which could be lived in without having location access issues, such as bathrooms being too far away, or annoyance form the garage. A few things I would change would be maybe choosing a different medium for creating the home. It was very time consuming and arduous. It also came out looking uneven in certain spots, and the lines made from the toothpicks makes it look more like a shack. That could have been poor placement on my part. Another thing would be adding layers so that the ground levels can be seen better and pathways could be seen. But I am overall content with my piece.
Critique
The color palette is inspired by Pamela Dabah, in which greens, browns, and grays are used. The form, of the waterfall and the fountain area are inspired by the rustic themed properties. There are a lot of curved and elegant lines that create a more soothing atmosphere, There is a combination of organic shapes and geometric shapes in which provide a sense of balance and unity within the property. There are positive and negative spaces located in the areas in order to give it a more tranquil environment by having balance. The textures are similar as well, containing mostly soft and smooth. The emphasis of the property would be its waterfall and fountain, with the rest of its complete self and all its little details second. Harmonious movement is found in the pathways created, as well as the water, and the variety of plants and possible animals.
This property is different from Pamela Dabah's due to its form. It is a bit less free formed in the way it is constructed. Its structured in a very linear fashion, either horizontally or vertically. Even though it was intentional, there is also a lot less use of space, which makes the textures seem much more soft and simplistic. Movement isn't as sharp in its curves because the curves are less dramatic in its spaces. The proportion is also a lot larger, compared to Pamela Dabah's other projects.
