"Be Your Blessed Taboo"
Size: (3) 60.96cm x 30.48cm Medium: Acrylic on Canvass Date: 02/02/17 |
Exhibition TextThe vision for this work was to present myself, how the environment affects me, and how i will effect my environment. I am free spirited and sparkly, fueling and flooding with juices, living in a complex environment, often within my head, and I will turn the chaos within my environment into something admirable. The Fauvist movements use of bold and pure colors, along with the artist Petey Ulatan's cubed landscapes, had greatly influenced my piece. The piece is acrylic on canvass.

Reflecting:
As for the process, it was difficult trying to match symbols with thought. Ulatan introduced me officially to the idea of complex and imaginary environments. As an artist, play and imagination is a necessity. Something resonated with me as I viewed the broken landscape. I researched more closely related images and found album covers for Ryan Hemsworth and Koan Sound. I would often times try and describe my mindset, and this seemed like the perfect way of visually presenting it. The Fauvist movement also had an affect on my piece. I wanted my environments bold in color to draw attention and feel alive. Fauvism taught me that color can carry a lot of power. The background gradients are smooth and soft, evoking a calm, cushioning atmosphere My intentions were to have the left panel represent myself. The object at its center is a crystal reflecting off different colors and swaying by a thread of crystal beads. The exuberant sway represents free spirit and grace. Crystal formations are a product of extreme pressures and heat of the environment. When the conditions are right, crystals are born displaying their beauty. They reflect their surroundings in brilliance. This is why I chose to display myself as a crystal who is swaying. I am a beautiful product of my environment My intentions in the center piece were to have the broken landscape layout. This would demonstrate how complex and sometimes playful my environment is. It shows how it as effected me mentally and emotionally, as well as my draw to nature. I wanted to show how growing up, things were never what you'd expect them to be, but that didn't necessarily effect me negatively all the time. Sometimes the different perspectives imposed on me by my environment turned out to be a blessing. My intentions with the right panel were to present how I affected my environment. I wish to bring a playful sense of chaos that others would find interesting and beautiful. I want to affect my environment the way it has affected me. At the center I wanted to have the warmth surrounded and shared by coexisting crystals. It radiates bold colors shared by the other two panels Looking back at my piece, I really liked how it turned out. I wouldn't change anything. The peace itself is effective in being aesthetically pleasing, as well as demonstrating a playful tone. These playful tones are also emphasized by the color usage. The pieces were connected through color repetition, reoccurring crystals, and having its composition centered. |
Critique:
Ulatan and the Album covers were an inspiration and had effected my piece in many ways. There is a strong connection with these artists. Both pieces display fantasy like environments, in which the landscape is broken down and in different angles. Dianne Bollinger had inspired me to use bold colors to represent and evoke certain emotions, such as a hard pink for warmth and blue for tranquility.
However, differences are quite visible. The subjects look similar, but the environment color schemes and details within the third panel are different. This help show my inclination to nature and how nature itself has affected me in my life. Within the third panel, the orientation is changed so that it shows welcoming from the center panel, as if someone were to be able to walk from one world to the center of another one. The background colors are for heavy contrast.

Connecting to ACT:
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause and effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
I was influenced by the fantasy cubic worlds of Petey Ulatan, Koan Sound album cover, and Ryan Hemsworth's Album cover. by the Fauvist movements' bold and pure color usage. I decided to incorporate both within my piece.
What was the overall approach (point of view) the author (form your research) has regarding the topics of your inspiration?
The overall approach that all of my inspiration have tare being playful and bright. They have the willingness to view things in a much different perspective.
What kinds of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I discovered that the fauvists use color to influence the atmosphere and feelings projected from the atmosphere of the paintings.
What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
Ulatan, Koan Sound, and Ryan Hemsworth use playful deconstructions of envirnments to give a more playful and approachable feeling that catches the audiences eye through curiosity.
